IPL 2021- Match 15 Highlights CSK held their nerves to handle the Russell scare at Wankhede

The Yellow Army won their third match on the trot at Mumbai Wankhede Stadium. CSK’s openers and the bowlers set them this close win again Morgan’s Kolkata Knight Riders.

CSK held their nerves to pull off this win. Andre Russell and Pat Cummins played their cameos as the batsmen of the Yellow Army had posted a big score on the board and the bowlers too chipped in wickets which helped Dhoni’s men to win this match by 18 runs.

KKR won the toss and invited CSK to bat first in the 15th match of the IPL 2021 season. The CSK openers didn’t have any starting and finishing troubles on the tacky Wankhede pitch. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who failed to bat well in the first three games, came back strongly and shared a mammoth opening stand with his seasoned partner Faf Du Plessis.

CSK scored 54 runs in their first six overs of the powerplay overs. Faf and Gaikwad were watchful against Varun Chakravarthy, who bowled the first over of the match.

But after that, what followed is pure class, elegance, and power-hitting shots all around the ground. Pat Cummins, the premier fast bowler of KKR, went for 25 runs in his first two overs, which gave CSK the momentum.

In this process, Gaikwad smashed his first fifty of the IPL 2021 season. After his failure in the first three games, the 24-year-old batter from Maharashtra had shown immense improvement in his body language and stroke-making. Gaikwad timed the ball fluently and took on the lead bowlers of KKR in style.

At the other end, the South African star Faf Du Plessis was too good against KKR’s bowling attack. He was on the top of the bowlers of KKR and messed up their plans. Faf missed his well-deserved ton by a margin of just five runs.

CSK’s onslaught continued even after Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for a well-made score of 62 runs from just 42 deliveries, and he and Faf added 115 runs for the opening wicket. This was the first hundred-run stand for CSK in the IPL 2021 season. Then it was Moeen Ali who played fantastic cameo innings, which kept the pressure on KKR bowlers.

Moeen Ali’s fluent stroke play proved to be a masterstroke for CSK. His range of shots also had an impact on this game. Ali took on Krishna and Narine and scored 25 runs from just 12 balls.

MS Dhoni’s promoted himself up the order. It also reminded the final of the 2011 world cup final when Mahi came to bat ahead of Yuvraj Singh at this very venue. Dhoni played a cameo knock of 18 runs, and he carted Narine for his boundary against the Windies spinner.

Dhoni was out after the CSK score reached the 200 run mark, which was also the first time in his season. But still, CSK posted 220 runs because of Faf Du Plessis’s unbeaten 95 runs knock.

Faf held the one end up while the other CSK batters batted around him. Ravindra Jadeja had faced the final delivery, which went for a six, and that ended the CSK innings on a high.

KKR bowlers had no answer for the CSK’s batters onslaught. Every bowler of KKR had leaked runs and only three could pick up one wicket each to their names. Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine took one wicket each.

The top order of KKR failed to pursue 221 runs as Deepak Chachar sizzled again in Mumbai. He was the one who broke the back of KKR’s top order in this run chase, and he had good support from Lungi Nigidi as well.

KKR lost half of their side by the end of the powerplay overs. The top order of KKR was dismissed in a single-digit score. It was then a fightback led by Dinesh Karthik, Andre Russell, and Pat Cummins, which helped them reach closer to this mammoth score set up by CSK.

Dinesh Karthik’s 40 runs set the tone for KKR’s fightback, and Andre Russell was in the mood of smashing every ball. DK and Russ added 81 runs. But the partnership didn’t last long as Sam Curran clean bowled Andre Russell for entertaining innings of 54 runs which he scored just 22 balls.

The CSK bowlers saw another fight from Pat Cummins. The hard Aussie hitter didn’t have any support as Dinesh Karthik was out on 40 runs, and CSK kept chipping away with the wickets of tailenders.

Cummins stayed unbeaten till the end, and he single-handedly guided the KKR innings towards the 200 run mark. Although his unbeaten 66 run knock went in vain, he won every cricket fan’s heart due to this cameo innings.

The CSK bowlers were on a roll. They picked up the top order early and survived the scare of Russell and Cummins as well. Deepak Chachar was good in Mumbai again. He took four wickets to his name.

Lungi Nigidi picked up three wickets, and Sam Curran picked up one important scalp of Andre Russ, which allowed CSK to win this match by 18 runs.

Faf Du Plessis batted the whole 20 overs in this match, and he scored an unbeaten 95 runs. He was awarded the man of the match for his excellent batting show.
