How England Select Cricket Teams: ‘When We Say Data, We Don’t Just Mean The Numbers’

When it comes to cricket, can stats say everything?

Well the recent update suggests that selection process indeed need a look at something more than just statistics. 

The aim is that the player gains experience, improves himself and most importantly be consistent and productive for the team whenever he plays at an international level.

Zack Crawley’s example:

A perfect example for this is England’s Zack Crawley. He had just scored three centuries at the first class level when he earned his place in the playing 11 of England’s test squad as an opener. Even his average was 30.5 in first class cricket, which is considerably low, considering selection in the international test squad.

 But his skills of playing good against the bouncers and getting most of his first class runs at Canterbury, a low scoring ground made him the favourite for getting selected and he impressed by playing a knock of 267 against Pakistan.

Hence David Court, the lead in player identification panel of the England cricket board, said that when they talk about data, they don’t just mean the numbers, you get from ball tracking or Opta. He says they look more at the abilities of a player.
