WOMEN T-20 CHALLENGE 2020 WAS VIEWED 147% MORE THAN THE PREVIOUS SEASON

We always do talks on the popularity of Men’s cricketing leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), and many more. But have you thought about the popularity of the Women Cricket League? Well, I am not saying of WBBL. In India, Women cricketers have their league name Women T-20 Challenge.

The 2020 season of the WT-20 Challenge has recorded the highest viewership which is a record for any women cricket league. This edition of WT20C has logged over 5.34 billion minutes in viewership only in India.

‘It shows the love for Women Cricket in India!’ says Sanjog Gupta 

You will be shocked to know that the viewership of the last edition which was in 2019 was 2.20 billion. It means that there is a rise of 2.45 times of the previous one. The total unique viewers counted in this season is 105 million which is far greater than the previous season of 2019 which had 71 million unique viewers.

Significantly, the WT-20C was played in UAE due to the Covid-19 heavy outbreak in India and was played along with the playoffs of IPL 2020. It was a three-team tournament which was broadcasted across eleven Star sports channel and held from November 4 to November 9. The channel has the deal for the last eight years.

According to the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), and the media-rights holders of the BCCI, it was found that the viewership per minute was increased up to 147% in the 2020 edition. It isn’t over yet, the authorities also revealed that there is an increase of 47% in the unique viewers in India if compare to the last edition of 2019. 

The increment has made everyone excited including the head of Star Sport in India, Sanjog Gupta who said that the record-breaking viewership has shown that the love for women cricket is increasing in India. He also added that the Star Sports channel is giving its best for the upliftment of women’s cricket. He explained his statement that the channel is broadcasting the league in 5 major languages of India including Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and among 11 channels are there for the broadcasting same at the men’s league.

Before 2020, all the seasons of WT20C weren’t financially independent but in November 2020, BCCI held WT20C 2020 as an independent tournament in terms of finance. The league got its own sponsor and various official sponsors.

Conclusion

It is good to see that women’s cricket is uplifting and getting support from the audiences. Well, despite all of this many former cricketers raised questions over BCCI that they are not putting efforts similar to that of men’s IPL. What do you think? Have you seen any major change in the WT-20C?
