In a major development yesterday, Virat Kohli decided to step down captaincy after the World T20 2021 to be held in United Arab Emirates from 23rd October.
Right before the World T20, there are fresh reports that Virat Kohli went to the selection committee and wanted to remove Rohit Sharma from vice-captaincy.
Kohli has not won a single ICC trophy as captain yet losing in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 finals, losing in the 2019 World Cup finals being as the favorites.
Under his captaincy, the Indian team has been the number 1 ranked Test side for 5 successive years. They also reached the finals of the inaugural ICC Test Championship losing to eventual champions New Zealand.
Despite not winning a single ICC title, Kohli has won the T20I series in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. He is one of the batsmen to be in the top 10 rankings across all formats.
“Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people. Ravi [Shastri] Bhai and also Rohit [Sharma], who has been an essential part of the leadership group, I’ve decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.
I have also spoken to the secretary Mr. Jay Shah and the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability.”
Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, the Indian team would be looking to end the trophy drought as they will be featuring in ICC World T20 2021 to be played in UAE. They look like one of the favorites to win the trophy.
Along with mentor MS Dhoni and other senior players, Virat Kohli would be looking to do the bat talking and help India bring to glory again after MS Dhoni won the intrigue World T20 in 2007.
