St Kitts and Nevis Patriots eked out a thrilling 3 wicket win over St Lucia Kings to win their maiden CPL title played at Warner’s Park, St Kitts on Wednesday.
Kings captain Andre Fletcher won the toss and decided to bat first. Cornwall, Chase 43 each respectively and quickfire 39 off 21 balls by Keemo Paul at the end helped the visitors post 159 for 7. It was a disciplined bowling effort by Patriots bowlers as Fawad Ahmed and Naseem Shah took 2 wickets each while Drakes, Jaggesar and Allen grabbed 1 wicket each.
Chasing 160 runs to win, the hosts lost two early wickets of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis. Joshua Da Silva and Rutherford rescued innings with 45 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. Dominic Drakes was promoted at number 5 and looked in sensational touch right from word go.
As wickets fell from one end, Drakes showed intent making life tough for Kings. With Patriots reduced to 95 for 5, Drakes took the charge with some brilliant shots against Wahab Riaz and other kings bowlers. The match ebbed and flowed from one side to another as Allen fell in the 19th over. Allen and Drakes added 44 runs for the 6th wicket.
With equation 9 runs off 6 balls, Drakes managed a cracking boundary to level the scores for the hosts. He then managed to take single to help St Kitts and Nevis Patriots register 3 wickets win in a last ball thriller.
Drakes held his nerves to remain not out on 48 off 24 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. For his match winning knock, Drakes was named the man of the match award.
Twitter was in awe of this performance by Drakes who kept his calm and helped St Kitts side win their maiden CPL title. St Kitts finished last on the points table in 2020. Thanks to captaincy by Bravo, superb performances by Evin Lewis with bat made life tough for the oppositions.
