The Double Centurions Of ODI Cricket

For any batsman, scoring a double hundred in cricket is an enormous achievement. In olden generations, scoring a double hundred in Test Cricket was considered as the greatest achievement of all times. But now, some players have achieved a tougher task of scoring a double century in the 50 over cricket.

It isn’t easy to score 200 runs in the ODI format because the batsmen get only 300 balls to face. But still, the batsmen have achieved this impossible feat in their careers. The batsmen have successfully put behind the score of 194 runs, considered the highest individual score in ODI cricket, and braced the double ton mark.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 – The Master Blaster is the first man on the planet to score the double ton in the fifty-over format. Sachin Tendulkar achieved this feat in the game against a good bowling attack of South Africa in 2010. The Master scored unbeaten 200 runs in 147 balls. He hit 25 fours and three sixes in this great knock. Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni supported Sachin at the end of that innings and allowed Sachin to get this epic milestone.

Rohit Sharma’s three double centuries– The HITMAN of India has scored three double centuries in the ODI format. No one has achieved this spectacular feat in ODI Cricket history. Rohit scored his first double ton came against the mighty Aussies in 2013 at Bangalore.

In this knock, Rohit went after the spinners of Australia, and he also announced himself as the greatest ODI opener. Then in 2014, Rohit scored the highest individual score in the ODI cricket history. His 264 run knock was like mount Everest for the opposition team, Sri Lanka. Hit Man achieved this feat in Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

His last double ton was also against a mid-core bowling attack of Sri Lanka. In 2017, Rohit had captained the Indian Team for the first time in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. In just the second match of his captaincy, Rohit smashed his first 200. The match was played in Mohali, and all of his double tons are known for the great acceleration. Rohit was unbeaten on 208 runs in this game.

Virender Sehwag – Viru Pajji is the second Indian to score a double hundred in ODI Cricket. His double ton came after Sachin Tendulkar.  Viru is still known for his explosive batting stints. He scored 219 runs at Indore against West Indies.

Sehwag was the first captain to score a double hundred in ODI Cricket. He had led the side because MS Dhoni was rested for the series. Viru smashed the Windies bowlers all around the park, and he brought his maiden and only double ton in that match. Viru scored 219 runs in 149 balls, and he had a strike rate of 146.90.

Chris Gayle – The West Indian power-hitter is the only player from that country to smash a double ton in the 50 over format. In the 2015 world cup, Gayle smashed his first and only double hundred of his career.

Admittedly, it came against a weaker side like Zimbabwe. But still, the innings was remarkable by its standards. Gayle scored 215 runs from 146 balls. He smashed ten fours and 16 sixes to become the fastest double centurion.

Fakhar Zaman – The Pakistani opener also scored his maiden double ton against weaker opposition, Zimbabwe. He is the first player from that Asian country to achieve this feat.

In 2018, Zaman scored an unbeaten 210 runs and went past Saeed Anwar’s highest score of 194 runs in ODI Cricket. He smashed 25 fours and five sixes in this knock. His 210 runs knock had a strike rate of 134.62.

Martin Guptill – The Kiwi batsman Martin Guptill is the only player from New Zealand to smash a double hundred in the ODI Cricket history.  Guptill achieved this feat in the 2015 world cup in Australia. He scored 237 runs against West Indies in the quarter-final match of the ICC mega event.

Guptill’s score of 237 is the highest individual score in the world cup tournament. Marlon Samuels allowed the Kiwi batter to register this record in the world cup tournament because earlier he had dropped Guptill.
