TOM BLUNDELL WANTS TO FORGET AN UNUSUAL WAY OF GETTING OUT IN CRICKET!!

Tom Blundell, a first-class cricketer from New Zealand had been given out as per the rules for obstructing the field. He is just the second kiwi player in the last 70 years to get out by obstructing the field and he also knows it and wants to forget it as soon as possible.

He used hands not feet!

Obstructing the field can be of any kind, but in this case, Blundell could have used his foot to obstruct then he could have given not-out. We are talking about the first-class match which was played between Wellington and Otago.

Plunkett shield is running in New Zealand which is a sign of the return of domestic cricket in the country after the lockdown. In this match, Wellington was batting and its batsman Tom Blundell was at the crease.

Blundell was facing Jacob Duffy from Otago and his one delivery surprised him which made the ball looped off from his bat and moved toward the stump. In an attempt of throwing the bowl away from him used his hands and hit the ball away from the stump.

As per the rules, a batsman can use his foot to hit the ball or obstruct the bowl if it is reaching towards the stump but Blundell used his hands and which is considered illegal in the ICC set of rules and was given out by the umpire.

The rule of obstructing the field was added three years before which gives the umpire the power to send the batsman into the dug-out. Earlier the player had to face suspension for obstructing the field.

Before Tom Blundell, another Kiwi batsman was given out for this unusual reason. Canterbury’s batsman John Hayes became the first batsman in the history of New Zealand to throw his wicket by this in session 1954-55.

So, Tom Blundell wants to forget the way of throwing his wicket and will take care of it from now on. It just the beginning for this youngster as he is a first-class cricketer and every cricketer goes through a phase where he does something unusual. We have seen these pieces of stuff in International Cricket too. Though ICC has provided some relief in obstructing the field rule as now the batsman will be given out. He won’t be suspended.

Conclusion

Every Sportsman should know about his or her sport. Sometimes these kinds of stuff happen and we should move forward by forgetting the incident and taking the lesson.
