On Sunday, the Chairman of the IPL Government council Brijesh Patel confirms that UAE is now a step closer to host IPL 2020.
After the postponement of the T20 World Cup and some matches, everyone considered that IPL 2020 will be postponed as well. But BCCI came up with some solid decision which has given us some hope of IPL.
UAE has already hosted IPL very successfully in 2014 and before choosing UAE, the Indian board kept as host either India or Australia. But due to travel restrictions in Australia, the window was quite open for UAE.
Emirates Cricket Board had sent the proposal to host IPL 2020 to BCCI in April. After lots of discussions, BCCI has accepted their proposal and both the team will be working together.
Now it has been officially confirmed that Indian Premier League 2020 will be held in the UAE. The UAE Cricket Official has tweeted in their site on 27th July that Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has received the Letter of Intent from BCCI to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. It would be the 13th Edition of IPL as well as 2nd time after 2014 where the tournament will take place in beautiful cities of the UAE.
BCCI has also received approval from sports ministry now, they are only waiting to get a green light from the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs.
Initially, these cash-rich T-20 matches were supposed to start from 29th March. But due to the pandemic situation, the coin has flipped and almost everything got shut for close for 4 months now.
Indian board initially tried to make India as host but, BCCI has declared to choose other countries considering the rise in +ve cases, after their Apex Council meeting on 17th July. After the discussion, UAE is the 1st choice they came up with.
Even BCCI made it clear that it is not like a 2009 match where for the 1st time in history IPL has been moved to South Africa due to the General Elections. There were no intentions of changing the host but they had to. And this time the situation is entirely different. It is in concern to the wellbeing of every person who is associated with the game.
Brijesh Patel also confirmed the eight IPL teams are – Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The team will get 4 weeks to prepare for the tournament in Dubai itself. UAE will help in setting up the safety and security camps for the teams.
Brijesh Patel has further added that now they are waiting to understand whether the commercials flights will be available by the time they travel or they have to use Chartered flights. It’s not just that only Indian players would be flying to UAE, it is other players from across the world who would be traveling to UAE.
