The Achievements Of MS Dhoni And Virat Kohli As The Test Captains Of India

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli are the two great Indian captains in India’s cricketing history. Before India leaves for England for the World Test Championship Final against New Zealand.

On 18th June 2021 the five-match Test series against England, which starts from 4th August 2021, we shall look at the achievements of both the players as the Test captains of the Indian Cricket Team.

Virat Kohli will be breaking MS Dhoni’s record of most matches as India’s Test captain. Kohli is tied with Mahi Bhai’s record of captaining 60 Test matches, and VK will break this record in the WTC Final, and he will be hoping to do it in style by winning the Test championship against a strong Kiwi side.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

MS Dhoni made his international debut in 2004, and it was in the 2007 World T20 which gave a glimpse of his captaincy skills. Then in 2008, MS Dhoni captained the Test side for the first time, and it was said the Mahi would be the successor for Anil Jumbo Kumble.

India won the series against England at home, and that was when Mahi was the full-time Indian Test captain. The dhoni-led Indian Test team was unbeaten in the first ten Test series. After that, India won seven Test series, and three Test series were drawn.

MS Dhoni was the first Test skipper to win a Test mace. India defeated Sri Lanka at home by a margin of 2-0 in December 2009, which allowed the Indian Team to reach the top position of the ICC Test rankings, and thus MS Dhoni won the Test mace for India for the first time. That Indian Team was on top till they were whitewashed in the overseas series.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was just the second Indian Test captain to win a Test match at the Home of Cricket, Lords. In 2014, India won the first test match against England on their tour at Lords.

Dhoni insisted Ishant Sharma bowl short and which resulted in India’s historic win. That win was also the last overseas win in Mahi’s captaincy because he had announced a shocking sudden retirement from the Test arena in that same year.

Dhoni also won the test series on New Zealand soil in 2009, and he was the only captain when India successfully drew a Test series on the South African soil in 2011 before their triumph of ICC World Cup 2011 at home. Dhoni had won 27 Test matches during his captaincy career. He had captained India for 60 tests, and he had won 21 home series as a Test skipper.

Virat Kohli

Kohli’s captaincy career had started the same way as Dhoni. On the Australian Tour, MS Dhoni handed the captaincy to Virat after Mahi bid adieu to Test cricket. Mahi was captain cool while Kohli was Captain aggressive. Even though Kohli’s captaincy stint did start well, he took the Team to greater heights later.

Kohli won his first series against Sri Lanka when India toured the island nation in 2015. India lost the first test. But they bounced back extremely well to win them back by a margin of 2-1. Like Dhoni, Kohli was also unbeaten in the first 10 Test series. As a result, India won nine series and drew just one Test series.

India won the test mace under Virat Kohli as a well. In 2016, India won the Test series against West Indies by a margin of 2-0, and still, now they have been ranked the number one team in the traditional format of Cricket.

Kohli had won some Test matches, which India didn’t win when MS Dhoni was captain of the Team. The bravo Virat-led Indian Team won the test match at Johannesburg in 2017, and in 2018, India won their first-ever Test series on Australian soil under Kohli.

India won the Test series by a margin of 2-1 and clinched the series for the first time in 71 years. The Team also won the Test series in 2019, but Virat Kohli wasn’t the captain of that Test side.

The captaincy did change Virat Kohli as a batsman. However, he continued to pile on the runs for the Team, and he smashed six double tons as the Test skipper, which is the most, and Kohli is the only Indian captain to score a double ton in a foreign country. Dhoni had scored just one double century that came in Chennai against Australia in 2013.

Virat Kohli has led Indian in 59 Test matches till now. Now he will equal Dhoni’s record of leading the most Test matches for India in Test matches for the country. However, Kohli has the opportunity to end this record in style by winning the ICC event in England.
