Former Indian all-rounder and World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev made his stand clear on the Split Captaincy culture by saying that if Virat is fit to play all three formats, he should continue with his captaincy in all three formats. Significantly, after making Mumbai Indians Champions for the fifth time, fans want to see Rohit Sharma Captaining the T-20 side.
‘A MNC doesn’t have two CEOs’ believes Dev
Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to win their fifth IPL title this year. This victory has given birth to a debate over the captaining of the national team. Currently, Virat is leading the team in all three formats of the game. But fans want to give Rohit at least the captaincy of the T-20 side.
Kapil Dev reflected his views on the burning debate by saying that split captaincy culture is not a part of Indian Cricket. Having different captains give birth to differences in the team. He gave the example of an MNC and said that a MNC doesn’t owe two CEOs. In the same way, it will become hard for the team to connect with a single captain at a time.
He added that 70% to 80% of our players play all three formats thus it should be kept in mind that the team needs a single unique captain. A new captain brings new ideas and then you have to wait for the next series where you will find a different mindset of the captain.
Though he added that if Virat is not fit then we can go for Rohit Sharma but giving Sharma permanent captaincy is not a great idea. It will bring differences among the players who back their captain. Then this thing will keep annoying them that he will be our captain in the other format.
The legendary player underwent an angioplasty as he suffered a cardiac rest recently. He was curious to say on the fast bowlers of this generation. He said that the bowlers must learn to swing the bowler despite showing the variations.
Dev believes that if a bowler doesn’t know to swing the bowl, his variations are useless. He is highly admired by Sunrisers Hyderabad’s two pacers name Sandeep Sharma and T.Natarajan. Sharma bowls at 120kmph but he swings the bowl which makes him dangerous and T.Natarajan knows how to bowl Yorkers in the perfect place said the former captain. He added swinging the bowl is an art that takes a bowler to the longest format of the game. At the end of his interview, he requests the ICC to give more attention to the test format of the game.
Though Rohit has got success in IPL but handling a national team is different and Virat has gained experience in that. I agree with Kapil Dev. What do you say? Let us know.
