On the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, Steve Smith broke his century drought and Marnus Labuschagne scored his first Test century abroad to lead Australia to 298-5.

After losing their openers,  Marnus Labuschagne smashed 104 to put his side in command. However, the visitors had Labuschagne stumped off Prabath Jayasuriya, a left-arm spinner making his debut, when they were 204 for three at tea in Galle.

Australia chose to bat first in an effort to win the two-match series, and Labuschagne and Steve Smith put on a 134-run partnership when their wickets were broken.

Smith was batting on 52 at the time. And remained unbeaten until he scored 109.

Labuschagne scored his first century away from home and sixth Test century while Kasun Rajitha, Sri Lanka’s lone pace bowler, struck first, dismissing David Warner for five runs in the fifth over.

Usman Khawaja was dismissed by off-spinner Ramesh Mendis for 37 just before lunch, but Labuschagne remained resolute and attacked Sri Lanka’s spinners.

Labuschagne and Smith handled the spinners with ease till the stand came to an end. Labuschagne had previously survived a missed stumping by Niroshan Dickwella in the first session on 28.

Earlier as part of the two-match series, Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat in the second Test.
