All the decisions taken in cricket are made by umpires and now the technology is getting more and more developed in every field. Supporting the Cricket rules the batting legend Sachin Tendulkar once again has come up focusing on new technologies and TV playbacks when the on-field umpire is opposed while making Leg Before Wicket (LBW) Decisions.
He has spoken about giving more weights to the TV replays through the Decision Review System (DRS). It has always been a matter of discussions about the accuracy of the DRS and the decisions are questioned several times.
The matter, this time, started after the match between West Indies and England in the first Test after the COVID-19 global lockdown where the LBW calls turned out in a debate.
The existing DRS rules specify that if the replay of ball-tracking shows the hitting of a ball to the wicket is less than 50 percent then the decision taken by the on-field umpire will be final. To reverse the on-field umpire’s decision, the ball-tracking must show the hitting of the ball to the wicket to be more than 50 percent.
Sometimes this decision becomes unfair for the batsmen and even bowlers. And this is where Sachin Tendulkar feels to change the format of DRS and expects to review the system by International Cricket Council (ICC).
In chatting with Brian Lara, West Indies legend, Tendulkar mentioned that one thing he doesn’t agree with the ICC is the DRS system. Tendulkar also suggested that when the DRS is taken and the decision goes to the third umpire the technology should decide the result like it is done in Tennis which states that its either out or not (without depending on the 50 percent agenda).
Many former cricketers agreed with Tendulkar saying it was 1000 percent correct. This is the only reason that India became the last Test-playing nation that agrees for DRS in 2016. Before that India resisting was largely influenced by Tendulakar’s point of view.
