Sachin Tendulkar Didn’t Like Facing The First Ball In ODIs, Sourav Ganguly, Reveals His Answers On Not Taking The Strike First

One of the most iconic opening pair of Indian Cricket Team, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. They have played opened the innings for 176 times in ODIs and scored more than 8227 runs at an average of 47.55.

They also had 29, 50 runs partnerships, and a whopping 26, 100+ runs partnerships during these 176 innings. We saw Sourav Ganguly take the strike and face the first ball for most of the matches, he recently told about the answers Sachin used to give about not taking the strike first.

Where Did This Conversation Happen?

Recently on a chat show on bcci.tv, we saw current Indian Batsman Mayank Aggarwal and the Current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly we saw Mayank asking Sourav “Did Sachin Paaji force you to take strike when you opened the batting in ODIs?”

Sachin’s Answer

The BCCI President responded to it by saying that Sachin had 2 answers depending on his form. Sourav said “Always he did. He had an answer to that and I used to tell him ‘yaar sometimes you also face the first ball.

He had 2 answers to it – he believed when his form was good it should continue and that he should remain at the non-striker’s end, and then when his form wasn’t good he said ‘I should remain at the non-striker’s end because it takes the pressure off me”

Sourav also said unless someone walked past him and went and stood on the non-striker’s end while he was already on TV he would have to face the first ball. Sourav also shared that this happened 1-2 times when he walked past him to the non-striker’s end to have him face the first ball.

We have seen Sachin’s reluctance to face the first ball throughout his career as he has only faced the first ball 47 times while playing as an opener in 340 innings in ODIs. However, you can’t question the ways of the Master Blaster and maybe he just didn’t like facing the new ball. Whatever it maybe it worked out good for him and he is now one of the greats of the sport.
