After India lost the hope of winning the match, Kapil Dev’s great innings took India to a terrific victory.
India decided to bat after winning the toss.
While after losing the toss for the fifth consecutive time, Zimbabwe bowlers Peter Rawson and Kevin Curran bowled sharply to rout the Indian top order.
Openers Gavaskar and Srikkanth failed to score, while the top five batsmen could collectively score mere 17 runs.
The organizers of the match were panicked as India was on the verge of losing the match.
However, when India was in danger at 78 for 7, Madan Lal joined Kapil Dev and the duo outperformed the earlier batters.
Kapil scored an amazing score of 175 not out off 138 balls, with 16 fours and six sixes when India was recovering from 9 for 4, and then 17 for 5.
Kapil played an incredible inning by taking advantage of the pitch.
One side of the boundary was such that the player could take three runs for the hit while another side was such that it was impossible to take two runs for the same hit. Thus Kapil used it to his advantage.
After scoring a century Kapil called for a new bat, one of the latest fashions of that time.
These innings were Kapil’s best in his career and comprised 66% of India’s total of 266 for 8.
After winning the match Kapil bent down to kiss the ground as he came off the field as the victorious captain.
At the close of the innings Sunil Gavaskar who was Kapil’s rival for the captaincy, met him as he came off the field with a cup of water, which Ali Shah thought was a very nice gesture of respect.
On one hand, where India’s entry into the semi-finals was in doubt, Kapil’s innings changed the game as India emerged as the 1983 World Cup Champions.
This match was not telecasted, which was disappointing for Kapil along with others.
Kapil bought the tape which captured his great innings from one Indian supporter who bought his video camera and recorded his game for a hefty sum.
