MOST SUCCESSFUL CAPTAIN IN THE HISTORY OF ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

Before discussing one of the most successful captains that we have seen in cricket, let’s talk about what a captain is. A captain is a person who is responsible for the good or bad performance of the team.

Not only is he responsible for the wins and loses, but he also leads his team, he gives directions, he motivates his team members and he takes care of the strategies and plans.

A captain should be an ideal one and his teammates should respect him and also should follow his orders. If the teammates are not following their captain’s orders, that means something is wrong with the team. A captain when comes to cricket is more of a leader and less of a boss.

A leader is the one who is an influencer of the team, he has to be there for his team in both bad as well as good situations. No matter how bad the circumstances may be, he has to keep motivating his teammates and also be positive all the time. There are a lot of things that a required in a person to be an ideal captain.

WHAT IS AN IDEAL CAPTAIN?

A captain has to go through a lot before becoming an ideal captain. A captain has to think about the whole team that he’s playing for rather than thinking about his interest. Also, he should be communicative to his players and make decisions in the team’s interest.

He should be a team player, not an individual one. Also, the captain has to treat all his players equally, he can’t be biased for one. If a player is struggling with his form, the captain has to hear him out and help him get back to the form.

After having all those qualities, he should also be physically active and a good player himself. If he is only good with the external qualities and can’t play well, he should be a coach, not a captain. After all those things, he should be a good sportsman too. Before discussing the best captains that ODI cricket has ever seen, let’s first talk about th3 countries which produced the best captains ever.

INDIAN CRICKET CAPTAINS

Since the game was started getting played in India, the country and its people have always been a fan of the game. If we see about the most winnings in all the formats of the game, one can easily spot the Indian cricket team in all the years.

India has released a lot of players, who turned out to be a very good captain later. Starting from the Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi who was one of the youngest captains in Indian cricket history, he was a very good captain, one can easily know from the test match that India won in 1967.

After Pataudi, the era of Kapil Dev started and who doesn’t know Kapil Dev. Kapil Dev was a brilliant player, everyone knows his 1983 world cup which completely changed the game for Indians.

Kapil Dev came as a revolutionary man in the history of Indian cricket. Kapil Dev got the game in the times when the West Indies used to be the ruler of cricket in the world.

After Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin came who was also a very good player. He got numerous wins for India during the late 80s. Unfortunately, he got into a match-fixing scandal which took some of the crucial years of his career and by the time he got free, things were quite changed in cricket and he was old.

After Azhar, the next guy was our very own Sourav Ganguly who is also known as Dada. Sourav Ganguly gave India a lot of great players during his captaincy.

After Ganguly, the other man who came as a revolutionary was none other than the Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the man who needs no introduction. MS Dhoni has won a lot of hearts in past. He is still one of the best captains that the Indian team has ever produced.

Also, the Indian cricket team won the highest matches under Dhoni’s captaincy. Under Dhoni’s leadership, the Indian team has become one of the strongest cricket teams in the world. Dhoni is so far considered the best captain in Indian cricket history.

The latest captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli comes the last. Under Kohli’s leadership, the team has won the highest number of test matches. Also, India won nine test series from 2015 to 2017. Virat Kohli is so far the only Indian captain who won a test series in Australia.

Kohli is considered the “King of Cricket” in the world. Kohli is physically very fit and very fast on the ground. He is great at running between the wickets while batting as well as defending boundaries while fielding.

Kohli is a brilliant batsman too. Recently, he was awarded by International Cricket Council the award of the ‘Cricketer of the Decade’. His fans also call him King Kohli. Kohli has so far scored more than 7000 runs in test cricket and 11867 runs in the ODIs. Virat Kohli has just started and there will be a lot of achievements to come for him. Hopefully, he will break all the records of previous captains.

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET CAPTAINS

The Australian cricket team, who always had a name in the world when it came to cricket, has also released numerous great captains. The first one is Mark Taylor. Taylor was a very kind and generous guy. He never showed any attitude to his players or anyone else.

Clarke was the guy who got one of the most famous wins for the Australian cricket team. Talking about his batting abilities, he is the first person in cricket history who has hit double centuries in test four times.

Allan Border is the next in the line after Clarke. The border was quite a responsible guy. He also had decent wins during his tenure and he was the guy who got his team back to the competition from the bottom of the table.

After the retirement of Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh turned out to be the best captain the world has ever released. Steve became the captain in the year 1997. Under Steve’s leadership, the Australian team won 16 test matches back to back which is one of the longest in history. Also, he got 41 test wins out of 57 which is a very good ratio.

Last but not least is none other than the great Ricky Ponting. Not only Ponting has some great records to his name, but he also won millions of hearts during his career. Ponting started his career in 2002. Ponting got three world cup titles during his captaincy and also has 34 matches winning streak too.

There are numerous records to Ponting’s name which hasn’t been broken yet. Ponting has the most ODI wins as a captain. The team won 165 One Day International matches under Ponting’s captaincy. He is undoubtedly one of the best in Australia.

WEST INDIES CAPTAINS

After India and Australia, West Indies also has some of the great captains in cricket history. There was a time when the West Indies team used to be on the top of the table with high numbers. The first on the list is Clive Lloyd who became captain of the team in 1974.

He was one of the best players in test cricket. The team won 27 matches back to back. Also, the team won a World Cup and came runners up under Lloyd’s captaincy.

Carl Hooper is also the best of the West Indies. He became the captain in the late 80s. Hooper started his career with a century in 1987. Hooper had many records to his name. Though many of the sportspeople think that he could have achieved more than he did.

Next is one of the most famous guys from the West Indies who needs no introduction. The name of the West Indies stalwart is Brian Lara. Brian Lara is the highest test scorer in a single match with 400 runs not out. He also holds the record of highest runs in a single over in test cricket with 28 runs. The team won a lot of series and championships under Lara’s captaincy.
