Delhi Capitals – DC earned a crucial 12 points and went top on the ladder of the points tables. DC displayed another superb performance against PBKS – Punjab Kings in this season. DC won both games with comfortable and convincing margins against Punjab Kings in this IPL 2021 season.
In yesterday’s match, it was another commanding performance with the ball and bat, which allowed DC to win the contest by seven wickets. The bowlers set up an easy target to chase for the DC batsmen.
After Skipper Pant won the toss and opted to field first, the Capitals bowlers were right on the money.
Ishant Sharma started the first over, which saw his accuracy of line and length to Prabhsimran Singh, who has still opened the innings with the new skipper Mayank Agarwal. PBKS was criticized for not opening the innings with Chris Gayle in the absence of KL Rahul.
Ishant bowled the first-over maiden as Prabhsimran Singh couldn’t time the ball, and it went straight to the DC fielders. Kagiso Rabada took the wicket of Prabhsimran Singh in the third as Singh’s struggle was ended on 12 runs, and he took 16 deliveries to score them.
Chris Gayle, who hit some lusty blows of Rabada, was eventually dismissed by the South African pace bowler. Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal was strangled at the other end. The new skipper played his part. But he didn’t get the majority of support.
PBKS were under pressure after Chris Gayle was clean bowled by Kagiso’s pacey full toss delivery. Gayle’s stumps went for a safari ride as he managed just 13 runs. Agarwal got a little support from David Malan. The duo shared a stand of 52 runs.
But when Axar Patel dismissed the number one batsman, the PBKS innings fell apart. Malan scored 26 runs, and then it was a captain’s innings that allowed Punjab to through. Otherwise, it didn’t look like PBKS will bat the whole 20 overs.
Mayank Agarwal played an innings of his life, and that too without any support. The middle-order was blown away with single-digit scores. Deepak Hooda was run out on a single run, Shahrukh Khan was dismissed on just four runs, and Chris Jordan was out for just two runs.
Mayank Agrawal’s unbeaten 99 runs allowed Punjab Kings to score 166 runs after they completed their whole 20 overs. DC bowlers were too clinical in this match. They didn’t allow PBKS batters to take the game away at any stage. Rabada picked up three wickets while Avesh Khan and Axar Patel got one wicket each.
The run chase of DC was started well by their openers, Shaw and Dhawan. Shaw maximized the powerplay overs while Dhawan happily gave the strike to Shaw. The DC openers added 63 runs in the first six overs, and they were right ahead of the game.
Prithvi Shaw was dismissed after his cameo knock of 39 runs which he scored just 21 deliveries. Then Steve Smith and Shikhar Dhawan allowed the DC team to race away to the hundred marks without any further blows. But Smith was out 24 runs. PBKS also got the wicket of Pant for 14 runs.
But it was too late for them as Shikhar Dhawan had guided another run chase for Delhi Capitals. Gabbar Dhawan was unbeaten on 63 runs, with Shrimron Hetmyer was not out on 14 runs. DC won the match by seven wickets and gained 12 points, and went top of the points table.
Punjab Kings didn’t have an impactful day with the ball and with the bat. Chris Jordan, Harpreet Brar, and Riley Meredith picked up one wicket each to their names.
Mayank Agarwal’s captain’s knock of 99 runs went in vain. But he was awarded the player of the match award for his solo batting show.
