After a lucky and narrow escape against Delhi Capitals, the Royal Challengers Bangalore team was wounded. This time, the Punjab Kings won their third match of the season, and PKBS defeated RCB third time in a row. Punjab’s good performance, which allowed them to win the match by 34 runs.
Punjab Kings batted first after RCB won the toss and bowled first in the 26th match of the Indian Premier League 2021 season. PBKS added a new opening batsman after they dropped Mayank Agarwal from the squad. Prabhsimran Singh opened the innings with his skipper KL Rahul.
But still, PBKS couldn’t start the innings on a good note as the first wicket fell in the third over after Prabhsimran Singh was out for just seven runs. Then the innings were taken care of by KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. The two ex RCB players played well and shared a partnership of 80 runs, controlled the innings well for Punjab Kings.
Chris Gayle started slowly, and later he found his magic touch. Gayle was eyeing his half-century and before PBKS reach the hundred-run mark. Daniel Sams, the RCB pace bowler, struck with a short-pitched delivery and Gayle glove to De Villiers behind the wicket. Chris Gayle was dismissed for 46 runs.
KL Rahul was still at the other end as PBKS lost the momentum in the innings with a bigger collapse. In 24 balls, Punjab Kings batsmen scored just 19 runs, and they lost four quick wickets.
Nicholas Pooran continued his poor form, and he was out for his fourth duck of the season. Shahrukh Khan was clean bowled by Chahal for a duck while Deepak Hooda was out for just five runs.
PBKS team were comfortably placed at 99 for the loss of one wicket. But after the dismissal of Gayle, they lost wickets in a heap, and they never looked in contention of scoring above 170 runs after that.
But still, they reached that score only because of KL Rahul, who stepped up his batting, and Harpreet Brar, who was the new addition to the PBKS team.
The duo shared an unbeaten stand of 61 runs from just 44 balls and trashed the RCB bowlers in the last five overs of the innings. Harshal Patel’s depth over bowling came under scanner once again as he gave 22 runs in his single last over, which allowed Punjab Kings to reach a good fighting score of 179 runs after their 20 overs were completed.
KL Rahul played magical innings. He was unbeaten on 91 runs, and he missed his well deserve hundred by a margin of nine runs. But KL ensured that this time Punjab Kings would post a defendable score. Rahul was equally supported well by the newcomer Harpreet Brar who was not out on 25 runs he faced from just 17 deliveries.
RCB bowlers started well and made a good comeback after Daniel Sams dismissed Chris Gayle. But after that, it was all PBKS batsmen who thrashed them all over the park. Jamieson picked up two wickets with Chahal, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Daniel Sams picked up one wicket each to their names.
The run chase wasn’t quite up the mark for Royal Challengers Bangalore. They still have over-dependence on Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers. If these two batting stalwarts don’t fire, they don’t get over the line.
RCB didn’t get to a good start. Devdutt Paddikal was out for just seven runs. Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar brought the innings on track and took the score past fifty runs.
But soon after that, Virat was dismissed for 35 runs, and RCB got a huge blow when Maxwell scored his first-ball duck against his ex franchise.
AB DE Villiers too was dismissed for just three runs and added RCB in more trouble. PBKS team struck wickets at regular intervals as RCB lost half of their side even when they reached the hundred-run mark. Patidar looked well set, but he couldn’t carry on, and he was out for 31 runs.
Harshal Patel scored 31 runs, and Kyle Jamieson was unbeaten on 16 runs. But RCB has faltered in this run chase as they end up with just 145 runs on the board. PBKS won this match by 34 runs and registered their third win against RCB on the trot.
The PBKS bowlers did an excellent job of restricting a batting powerhouse like RCB for just 145 runs. Ravi Bhisnoi picked up three wickets, Harpreet Brar took two wickets, with Chris Jordan, Mohammad Shami, and Riley Meredith picked up one wicket each.
Harpreet Brar was named man of the match for his all-around show. He took three wickets with the ball, and earlier, his 25 unbeaten runs were valuable to the team’s cause.
