IPL 2021 – Match 23rd Highlights – CSK reached the top spot after their cruising win over SRH

Chennai Super Kings have found their batting mojo in this IPL 2021 season. It was a disappointing IPL 2020 season for the Yellow Army, and in this season, also CSK started their campaign with a loss against Delhi Capitals. But now they have registered their five back-to-back wins and claimed the top position in the points table.

On a new surface that wasn’t used for a while, the orange army, SRH, won the toss and batted first. But CSK made early inroads and removed the dangerous Johnny Bairstow for just seven runs.

Skipper Warner struggled with his timing, and he wasn’t going at the pace we all know. While the comeback man, Manish Pandey, took on the charge and hit some boundaries in the powerplay overs and a huge to Moeen Ali.

Pandey looked well set even after he was dropped for few games. But Warner looked opposite to Pandey, who batted beautifully at the other end. Warner felt the heat of being an SRH skipper in this IPL season, reflecting with his performances. Yesterday was a tough day for the Aussie opener as he managed to score a boundary only once in the first six overs of the powerplay.

Warner’s strike rate reached a hundred in the 15th over when he smashed the first six off Nigidi. Skipper reached his half-century, but he didn’t feel good, and he looked upset most of the time.

In the 55 balls which Warner faced, he scored only three boundaries and just two sixes. Still, he shared a valuable partnership with Manish Pandey, which kept SRH in the game. David Warner was finally dismissed when he mistimed the short, which went straight to Jadeja. Lungi Nigidi picked the wicket of Warner for 55 runs.

Manish Pandey scored a half-century on his comeback. He looked good in this innings, and he also took a majority of the strike when he saw the skipper was struggling to time the ball, and in the end, he also perished for a well made 61 runs, and the partnership between Pandey and Warner also came to an end. They added a stand of 106 runs to keep SRH in the hunt.

Sunrisers Hyderabad lost only two wickets, but they didn’t put a big score on the board. After the 16th over, SRH managed just 134 runs on the board. Then cameo innings from Kane Williamson, who wasted no time putting the ball towards the fence. The former SRH skipper didn’t need to see any balls before it went to the boundary.

It was just purely timing, elegance, and class from the current New Zealand skipper, which lifted SRH to a decent score. Kane was in the game always, and he faced just ten balls and scored 26 runs with the help of four boundaries and one-six.

The ex CSK batsman, Kedar Jadhav, too, played his part. He finished the innings on a high after scoring one, four, and six of the last two deliveries of the final over. SRH got to 171 runs after their 20 overs were completed. Jadhav was not on 12 runs of just four balls, while Kane was not out on 26 runs.

The last few overs didn’t go well for CSK. They started well and controlled the middle phrase of the innings quite well. But Williamson thrashed Shardul Thakur for 20 runs in one over. When no one thought SRH would reach even close to 150 runs. But this over from Thakur allowed SRH to get over the 170 run mark.

Apart from Thakur, all the other bowlers were good for CSK. Lungi Nigidi took two wickets, and Sam Curran picked up one wicket to his name.

The run chase was good from CSK. The openers, Faf Du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad started the innings on a bright note. They shared an opening partnership of 129 runs which set the tone for the Yellow Army to chase down this target.

Du Plessis scored his third back-to-back fifty of the IPL 2021 season, while Ruturaj also didn’t shy off playing his natural game and continued his good form.

For SRH, it was only Rashid Khan who picked up the three wickets of the CSK innings. Without Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the pace attack of the orange army looked very weak.

In-form Ruturaj went to take on the maestro spinner from Afghanistan. Gaikwad did well in the three overs. But in the last spell of Rashid Khan’s spell, he picked up Gaikwad for 75 runs, Du Plessis for 56 runs, and Moeen Ali for 15 runs.

Despite the three hiccups, CSK went on to chase the target. Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja were the unbeaten batsmen who guided the Yellow Army through this run chase. Raina was unbeaten on 17 runs, and Jadeja was not out on seven runs. CSK chased the target in just 18.3 overs and won the match by seven wickets.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the player of the match for his fluent 75 run knocks. Gaikwad was the top scorer for CSK in this match, and his innings allowed the momentum to be in favor of CSK.
