The year 2021 continues to rise for Risabh Pant as he won his first game as the new captain of Delhi Capitals and that too against an experienced side like the Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings team. DC Beat CSK by seven wickets, and they have started their IPL 2021 season with a win.
Pant also won his first toss as a captain and opted to bowl in this match. CSK faced similar problems in the opening slot as last year. It started with a boundary. But both of their openers were dismissed in quick succession.
Ruturaj Gaikwad got the start that he needed. But the wicket of Faf Du Plessis made life difficult for the CSK team. Faf was caught plumb in front for a third ball duck. It was Avesh Khan who provided the first breakthrough for the Capitals.
Then Gaikwad was out for just five runs. Shikhar Dhawan picked up a great catch at slip, and Chris Woakes, the England pace bowler, delivered in his first over. CSK promoted Moeen Ali to the number three position as a pinch hitter with the comeback man Suresh Raina.
This idea worked as Ali and Raina motored the innings along nicely. Both the batsmen started slowly at the start. But once they were in their groove, it was difficult to stop them. Even an experienced spin bowler like Ravichandran Ashwin went for sixes. Raina and Moeen pounced on the off-spinner as most of his deliveries land into the empty stands of Wankhede.
But one cannot keep the champion bowler like Ashwin out of the game for too long. The partnership of 53 runs between Raina and Moeen was looking good, and finally, it was broken by Ashwin when Moeen Ali tried to play a reserve sweep, and he couldn’t hold on to that shot. Ali was caught by Shikhar Dhawan, who took his second brilliant catch of Saturday night. Moeen Ali played an impressive knock of 36 runs in his first appearance in the yellow jersey.
Ambati Rayudu was the next batsman to support the well set Suresh Raina. In his comeback season, Raina delivered the punch which CSK needed in their first game. Raina scored his 39th IPL fifty and went along nicely with Rayudu.
Both the batsmen helped CSK go past the hundred-run mark, and as they progressed along with the innings, the Delhi Capitals bowlers picked up three crucial wickets to make a comeback into the match. Rayudu was out on a slower delivery, which Woakes bowled.
In the next over, it was Raina who was unfortunately run out. Raina played a fine knock of 54 runs. Then came the massive wicket of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He was out for a second-ball duck. Avesh Khan continued to impress in this spell. He picked up his second wicket of the match as Dhoni was clean bowled. This duck from Mahi was his fourth in the IPL.
Then the last phrase of the innings was taken care of by Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja. After Mahi was out, their finish cameos, which helped the CSK team post a good score on the board. Sam Curran thrashed his brother Tom Curran for plenty, which had put the pressure back on the Capitals. Jaddu and Curran shared a quick fifty-run stand which enabled them to score 188 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their quota of 20 overs.
Sam Curran played a fine cameo which lifted the CSK team. He scored 34 runs from just fifteen deliveries, and Jadeja gave him good company. He was not out on 26 runs which he scored from 17 deliveries.
Avesh Khan and Chris Woakes were the picks of the bowlers from the DC’s team. They picked up two wickets each to their names. But Ashwin and Tom Curran were expensive in their spell. They ended their spells with one wicket each.
The DC openers were the on money to chase the huge target. Dhawan and Shaw both are on the mission to cement their spots for the upcoming World T20. They batted so well that they made a mockery of the CSK bowlers.
The DC openers shared a stand of 138 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan was the top scorer with 85 runs, and Shaw displayed a good how with the bat as he scored 72 runs. Both the batsmen were dismissed. But the CSK bowlers got those wickets very late in the innings. The game was gone by then.
Marcus Stoinis was also out for 14 runs, Then Skipper Rishabh Pant and Shrimron Hetmyer guided the team through a win. DC’s reply was tremendous as they lost only three wickets in this run chase. DC won the game by seven wickets.
Shardul picked up two wickets, and Bravo picked up one wicket. Otherwise, it was a disappointing performance with the ball from the men in yellow team.
Shikhar Dhawan took three catches and batted splendidly in this match. So he was the well-deserved candidate to get the man of the match award. Dhawan also scored fluent 85 runs to his name.
