The Punjab Kings franchise had bounced back in style after losing three matches on the trot in this IPL 2021 season. Punjab Kings have defeated the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, by nine wickets. After the bowlers restricted MI to 131 runs, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle guided the PBKS to this morale-boosting win.
Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first in this match. The PBKS bowlers were spot on with their line and lengths as they got an early breakthrough of the dangerous WK batsmen Quinton De Kock, who managed just three runs, and he was out in the first over.
Ishan Kishan was promoted to the number three position. But that move didn’t work for Mumbai Indians. Kishan managed to score just six, and he took 17 deliveries to get going. Ravi Bishnoi picked up Kishan.
Rohit Sharma ad Suryakumar Yadav were the only ones who guided these innings well in the middle phrases. They were the top scores of this match for the defending champions. Rohit and Surya shared a much-needed partnership that brought the MI innings back on track.
Hit Man looked in full flow, and so as Surya Kumar Yadav. They added a partnership of 79 runs which kept things under control for MI. But once, Surya Kumar was dismissed. The Punjab Kings bowlers were back in the game because of the weak middle order of Mumbai Indians.
Surya played well for his 33 runs. But like the past few innings, he couldn’t carry on. SKY was over-ambitious, and he tried to hit a long shot that went straight to Chris Gayle, and Ravi Bhisnoi got his second wicket in the form of SKY.
Rohit, who scored his first half-century of the IPL 2021 season, too, didn’t stay for long. He was out in the next over for 63 runs. Then the same old story has been hurting Mumbai Indians in that middle order.
There are solid players to keep MI in the hunt of this match. But currently, they are not in the mood of performing well for this franchise in this cash-rich league tournament.
MI didn’t get the Pollard Power in this match as well. At the same time, the Pandya Brothers continued their poor form with the bat and ball. Jayant Yadav, who bailed them out in the last match, didn’t get a chance to bat, and so Mumbai Indians managed to score just 131 runs on the board.
The out-of-form bowlers of Punjab Kings were back in their business. They started well and ended superbly, which helped them restrict a batting powerhouse of Mumbai Indians for a modest total.
Shami was back in form, and Arshadep continued his class while Ravi Bhisnoi did well in his first game. PBKS won the match by nine wickets mainly because of their all-around clinical bowling efforts.
Shami and Bhisnoi picked up two wickets each, while Deepak Hooda and Arshadeep Singh picked up one wicket each to their name. The run chase for Punjab Kings was easy. Mayank Agarwal was out early. But KL Rahul and Chris Gayle made sure that Punjab Kings will win this match by nine wickets.
KL Rahul was unbeaten on 60 runs, and he won the man of the match award for his excellent batting show, while Chris Gayle was not out on 43 runs. For Mumbai Indians, the Kiwi effect helped them take a wicket of Agarwal, who scored 25 runs and added 53 runs for the first wicket with KL Rahul in this run chase.
