Cricket betting: How does it work?

A cricket bookmaker is required to enable you to bet on cricket. Bookmakers collect the stakes, pay the winnings, and place the bets. It is important to understand cricket to know the teams and when the next match will be played. Cricket is a summer sport. However, this does not mean all games are only played between June and August. For example, the Australian summer is from December to February, and cricket is also played there.

What cricket competitions are there?

Cricket competitions and tournaments are numerous. So, there are plenty of betting opportunities.

Knowing more about the different cricket competitions will allow you to find the odds on the latest cricket matches that suit your play style. This is important. So, let’s find out more.

World Championships

The World Cups are more exciting. In the World Cup category, you have several options for placing cricket bets with your cricket betting provider. The ICC T20 World Cup (Twenty20 Cricket) and the Cricket World Cup (One-Day Cricket) are particularly popular. However, the range of bets here is not as large as that of the EM 2021 bets, for example.

Foreign Leagues

Alternatively, you bet on a team’s victory in a professional foreign league; for example, cricket bets on English or Australian leagues are suitable for this. In England, the Pro40 League is well known, formerly known simply as the National League, in which one-day cricket is played. Then, the Big Bash League in Australia is played in Twenty20 cricket. All states where cricket is considered a national sport have their own very popular leagues in cricket.

Cricket Betting on the Tests

The supreme discipline in cricket, however, includes the so-called tests, which can last up to five days per game and may only be played by the best national teams in the world. The International Cricket Council decides who counts. Some of the top teams, which have held coveted Test status for the longest and uninterrupted period, include the England national cricket team (since 1877), the Australian national cricket team (since 1877), and the West Indies cricket team (since 1928).

The West Indies cricket team stands out because it comprises players from multiple nations, not just one. They come from countries in the Caribbean or from British Overseas Territories, for example. The Irish and Afghan national teams are currently (as of 2021) the two teams most recently awarded Test status by the ICC. Both have only been admitted to the tests since 2018. In addition, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh also currently have test status.

The tests cover various competitions that lend themselves well to cricket betting. To do this, the national team travels from one country with test status to the country of another. There are recurring games between the two teams over several days or weeks in all conceivable styles of play.

The Ashes

In the Ashes, England meets Australia five times. This has happened twice in four years, once in England and once in Australia.

ICC Test Championship

Teams play for the lead in the world cricket rankings in the ICC Test Championship. In 2020, India topped the list, followed by New Zealand and Australia. The six most successful teams in the rankings since 1952, in descending order, have been:

  • Australia
  • West Indies cricket team
  • England
  • India
  • South Africa
  • Pakistan

Test league

The test league is brand new. Here the nine best cricket teams with Test status compete against each other. The league has only existed since 2019 and is held every two years.

Is there cricket in the Olympic Games?

There has only been one Olympic cricket match to date. Devon County Wanderers of England played Standard Athletic Club of France over two days in 1900. England won by 157 or 158 runs. The different number of final runs goes back to different sets of rules. Ultimately, Great Britain received only the silver medal for this victory; France got the bronze.

Cricket was supposed to be an Olympic sport as early as 1896, but hardly any teams wanted to participate. However, there are currently serious efforts to make cricket an integral part of the Olympic Games. The International Cricket Council (ICC) could propose Twenty20 cricket in the foreseeable future.
